Improving Management of Urinary
Tract Infections in Nursing Institutions
through Facilitated Implementation

This PERC funded research project lead by Christopher Crnich, MD, PhD studied the effects of the Wisconsin HAI coalition developed UTI Tool Kit. The purpose of this project was to study the impact of two different methods of implementing the UTI Improvement Toolkit in a sample of 20 Wisconsin nursing homes. Some of the facilities received an enhanced implementation approach including traditional implementation resources plus access to a coach (a trained nurse) as well as the ability to participate in ongoing learning sessions with other nursing homes. The purpose of the pilot project was to study whether or not access to a coach and interactions with peers in other facilities would result in a greater uptake of the UTI Improvement Toolkit and lower rates of inappropriate antibiotic use.
